Get your natural glow on for spring!

April is the perfect time to up your skincare game. Spring is in the air and you’re headed to your favorite rooftop bar to catch up with friends, so it’s time to get the SPF on!

It may not be 85 degrees yet, but it’s smart to get back into the sunscreen habit, as UV radiation is present regardless of temperature. Going to the beach or a ski resort? You’ll need plenty of sunscreen. Water, sand and snow all reflect damaging rays, giving your skin a double dose of UV.

How can I protect my skin from the sun naturally?

Clean beauty has (finally!) come to sunscreens as brands like Coola have gotten innovative with ingredients like red raspberry seed oil and red algea. They’re protecting your skin more naturally, with moisturization thrown in.

Which natural sun protection brands are actually good for my skin?

This season, we’re loving these three:

  1. Sunology – producing chemical-free UVA/UVB mineral sunscreen with moringa oil, making it as safe for the planet as it is for your skin.
  2. Suntegrity – a holistic, mineral sun care line without toxic ingredients and chemical UV blockers, adding antioxidants and amino acids to enhance protection and boost skin repair.
  3. Bare Republic – their cruelty-free and broad-spectrum sunscreens combine oils, plant extracts, and mineral actives like Titanium Dioxide to nourish and protect your skin.

PRO TIP: Natural, non-chemical sunscreens reflect the sun’s UV rays rather than absorb them as chemical ones do. So remember to apply natural sunscreens as the last step in your skincare routine, before makeup.

Is SPF 25 good enough to protect my skin?

Enjoying the sunshine may give you a temporary glow, but without skin protection and a sensible avoidance of peak daytime sunshine, the sun’s rays can cause hyperpigmentation, a decrease in skin elasticity, and accelerated signs of aging such as fine lines.

The Environmental Protection Agency reports that in many parts of the US, the sun’s intensity is becoming August-strong earlier in the year (think April!) Researchers recommend high SPF protection- while an SPF25 rating filters out 96% of UVB rays, an SPF50 rating works against 98% of them.

PRO TIP: Remember to check for labels confirming that your sun cream also protects against UVA rays.

Brands are already adding SPF protection to makeup products too. Supergoop! recently introduced the first ever eyeshadow with SPF 30.

Should I use an SPF product on cloudy days?

The simple answer is yes! You should be wearing a quality SPF moisturizer every day – even if the weather is showery or you’re sitting inside by a window. Skin-damaging rays can affect your skin through glass and clouds too.

And did you know that blue light from digital screens and even office lighting can reach deeper into our skin than UVA and UVB rays? Brands like Coola have products like its Full Spectrum 360º Mineral Sun Silk Crème to help mitigate the effects of blue light on your skin.

Skincare brands are constantly raising the bar to power up your SPF regimen.  Cruelty-free skin suncare specialists Supergoop!, for instance, have a Defense Refresh Setting Mist letting you reapply your SPF anytime, anywhere in seconds.

Is daily sun protection just for fair skin tones?

The sun doesn’t see tones, only skin! Warmer skin tones are still vulnerable to sun damage, as melanin doesn’t protect against all UV rays, while sun exposure leaves skin dry, damaged, and prone to wrinkles. Natural brands like Black Girl Sunscreen have chemical-free, vegan products that dry clear.

Other brands in this space include Bolden, who make responsibly-sourced, cruelty-free sunscreens for women of color. Brands stressing inclusivity include Unsun, with sunscreen products that are mineral-tinted for all complexions. Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen does not show up on diverse skin tones,  and feels like a makeup primer with its matte effect. This has earned it cult status, with many beauty journalists already avid fans.

Makeup brands are getting sun smart in an inclusive way too. On April 5, Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty brand is expanding shade diversity by launching its first ever bronzer for a sun-kissed look without the sun damage. Its Sun Stalk’r Instant Warmth Bronzer is a powder bronzer in eight shades to add a glowy, bronzed goddess look to all skin tones now and through summer.

Remember – only wear sunscreen on a day that ends with ‘y’ 😉
